Event Details

Beethoven is the first name in classical music. There are many firsts in his career. In his symphonies alone he was first to substitute the “scherzo” (Italian, meaning “joke”) for the usual minuet, first to write a symphony lasting longer than half an hour, first to repeat part of a third movement after starting the fourth, first to use a trombone in the orchestra, and first to incorporate voices in a symphony. He can be considered the bridge between the classical and romantic periods. All pianists must include several Beethoven sonatas in their repertories in order to be taken seriously. His only weakness was opera, yet his one effort, Fidelio, still holds the stage. His determination in the face of deafness was almost superhuman. The man and his music have provided endless fascination for readers, listeners, and, even scientists. The Pastorale Symphony will be the featured work of the May 7 – 10 Hartford Symphony concerts.
