Prosser Library
Community Room

Event Details

John James Audubon (1785 – 1851) was the first to catalog wildlife systematically. The paintings were said to be “drawn from nature”. It was “nature mort” (the French form for “still life”). Since stillness is a requirement for a model, and the camera had not yet been invented. Audubon shot thousands of birds for his subjects. He then used wires to arrange them “naturally”. It’s ironic that his name is now associated with protection of wildlife. In his later years he realized that some species had become extinct during his lifetime. It was too late for him to retract his part in the extinctions, but his notes on the subject may be the reason that, decades after his death, the Audubon Society was formed.
Join art and music enthusiast Jack Brin for a series of presentations on art and artists at Prosser Public Library in on selected Tuesdays at 1:00 PM. Each film screening will be followed by conversation about the particular artist or time period.
