This look at 20th century art is limited to the United States. It’s the story of Henry Geldzahler, who was curator of modern art at the Metropolitan Museum during the time when the centers of art moved, thanks to World War II, from Europe to New York. Geldzahler was a critic and historian. He was unique in that he was not only an observer, but a participant in the changes that occurred. Today’s film includes movie excerpts, stills, and commentaries of many artists who grew from anonymity to fame. It also demonstrates the contrast between “then” and “now” regarding the abstract expressionists.
