George Rochberg (1918-2005) worked his way through college playing piano in jazz bands in New York City. He began formal studies in composition at the age of 21. He has won many awards and fellowships, and held many teaching positions and other prestigious positions.  He is considered a leader in stepping away from the 12-tone school of music, leading back to tonality.

Morris Rosenzweig
(b. 1952) grew up in New Orleans, among "tailors, merchants, and strong-willed women of an extended family which has lived in southern Louisiana since the mid-1890's." He has composed over 50 pieces in a wide range of classical genres, including 2 song cycles and one opera, and his works have been performed all over the world.

John Adams
(b. 1947) is one of today's best-known composers. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2003 for his 9/11 memorial work. He was a minimalist early, though later works have been more substantial. He composed two operas (each of which, for different reasons, has led to controversy). Recipient of many honors, Mr. Adams has held positions of high distinction.

Russ Salk will bring his collection of recordings by contemporary composers for your listening pleasure. Enjoy musical excerpts and learn a bit about selected contemporary composers. Registration is appreciated.
