Toru Takemitsu is a Japanese composer who approaches the Western traditions from outside. His music asks the listener to abandon expectations of rhythmic or melodic progress, but also usually avoids reference to classical traditions of Japanese music.

Paul Schoenfeld was born in Detroit. He composed his first piece at the age of 7. He has lived in both Israel, where he once lived on a kibbutz, and the United States. His works have been performed by the New York Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, and the Haifa Symphony. He has won numerous awards and grants. He often employs Hassidic themes and rhythms in his music.
