Art Appreciation with Gwen Lewis and Dolores Howard

View two short films about Horace Pippin (1888 – 1946) and Benny Andrews (1930 – 2006), with time for questions and conversation about these two African American Artists today.

Horace Pippin: There Will Be Peace (28 minutes)

What many an artist spends years learning, Horace Pippin knew by instinct. A self-taught artist, Pippin’s paintings reflect his own life and concerns. A poet whose language is art, he expressed himself with forceful directness, striking color and originality.

Benny Andrews: The Visible Man (28 minutes)

As the son of sharecropper parents in Georgia, Benny Andrews was taught the value of hard work, perseverance, and imagination. He discusses these family influences along with his artistic accomplishments and goals in this intimate and informative production. Although Jeffrey Holder narrates, and art critics and curators expertly interject their opinions, Andrews' on screen persona remains the focus.  Often he is shown in his studio either creating a new collage or discussing the themes and craftsmanship of a recently created piece. He is proudest of his efforts to increase gallery showings for underrepresented groups and individuals. Andrews begins and concludes with the advice that the most important thing an artist can do is to express oneself wholeheartedly.  School Library Journal Review
