In the second of the two poetry workshops we will briefly
reinforce some of the
essentials of the first workshop, concentrating on
eliminating the abstract and
embracing the concrete and the essentials of “show, don’t
tell.” We will then go on
to explore another traditional form, the sonnet, in which
we will learn the
fundamentals of iambic pentameter and how to incorporate
that meter into a rhyme
scheme that is natural and not forced. We will use some
workshop time to write a
line or a few lines of a sonnet, just so you can get the
feel of the rhythm before you
endeavor to write a full poem on your own. I encourage
everyone to take copious
notes and there will be time at the end of the workshop
for questions.
