Alex Pauk is a
Canadian composer, conductor, and educator. He is credited with revitalizing life for
Canadian composers by founding the Esprit Orchestra, a new ensemble in Canada
devoted to playing new music, in 1982. He
has won numerous awards.
Nikolai Kapustin is
a Russian composer. Educated at Moscow
University, he was a jazz pianist, and used that background to compose music
bringing together classical structures with jazz idioms. He has been championed
by a number of prominent pianists.
Gyorgy Ligeti, a
Hungarian composer, has been described as "one of the most important
avante-garde composers in the latter half of the 20th century." He
composed music until very early in the 21st century, when illness forced him to
stop writing. He died in 2006.
