Event Details

Today's recordings include works by the following composers:

John Luther Adams (pictured here) is an independent voice in music. He was kicked out of several high schools, never finished his master's degree, and settled into a cabin in Alaska. Using nature as his inspiration for writing music, he created a voice which is singular and emotionally mature. Today hear his composition "Become Ocean", which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for musical composition.

Donald Grantham has won many awards, both for orchestral compositions and opera. His works have been performed by the Cleveland Orchestra, the Dallas and Atlanta symphony orchestras,  among others. He is a Professor of Composition at the University of Texas. Today hear his setting of the poetry of Pablo Neruda to music.

Peter Boyer  is one of the most frequently performed American composers of his generation. His work "Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” sampled previously in this series, is a dramatic, and  deeply moving piece.  It was premiered by the Hartford Symphony. Today hear his short work "Celebration Overture."

Russ Salk will bring his collection of recordings by contemporary composers for your listening pleasure. Enjoy musical excerpts and learn a bit about selected contemporary composers. Registration is appreciated.
