His "Russian Soul" is clear in many of his works.\nOne of these will be heard in today's program\, a concerto Sotto Voce for cello and\norchestra.\n\n \;\n\nRobert Starer\, died in 2001. He was a Jew born in Austria in 1924\, and\nmigrated to Palestine after Austria voted to merge with Nazi Germany. He\nstudied music in Austria\, Palestine\, and eventually in America at Juilliard\,\nwhere he earned his postgraduate degree. \;Starer was prolific and composed\nin many genres. His music was characterized by \;chromaticism \;and\ndriving rhythms.\n\n \;\n\nLei Liang\nwas born in China in 1972. As he was growing up\, he often heard cheerful\nMongolian folk music. In this Mongolian music\, he found a "magical range\nof expression".
