The Opioid Epidemic: A community conversation, National Issues Forum

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Prosser Public Library
Community Room

Event Details

Partnering with the University of Hartford the library is offering tonight's discussion using the National Issues Forums Institute format for our community conversation.

Drug abuse, a problem the United States has faced for decades, has taken a sharply more lethal turn with the rise of opioids—both legal pain-killers, such as oxycodone and fentanyl, and illegal ones like heroin. Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death among Americans under 50.
Options to be discussed:

Option 1: Focus on Treatment for All

This option says that, given the rising number of deaths from opioids, we must devote considerably more resources to treatment in order to make any real headway in turning around the epidemic.

Option 2: Focus on Enforcement

This option says that our highest priority must be keeping our communities safe and preventing people from becoming addicted in the first place.

Option 3: Focus on Individual Choice

This option recognizes that society cannot force treatment on people.

Background materials will be available to participants at the library. Stop by the adult service desk to pick up the booklet to prepare for the conversation when you register to attend.

The National Issues Forum-trained moderators of the discussion are current students at the University of Hartford.  Students in Hillyer College communication and speech courses with assistant professor of communication Rebecca M. Townsend, Ph.D. have received training in how to conduct National Issues Forums deliberations as part of their coursework. Dr. Townsend is part of the National Issues Forum Institute network partners.

Join the conversation tonight.  Limited seating. Registration required.
