Hollywood Singing and Dancing (1 hour)

The summer ends today with a relaxing trip through movie musicals.  Early efforts, such as the eye-catching Busby Berkeley musicals, took people’s minds away from the hardships of the depression.  There were no stories in them.  Music, dance, and story were soon combined in film adaptations of Broadway musicals.  Some musicals, however, were created just for film.  The studio most associated with musicals was MGM with a small city’s worth of personnel.  It might be particularly interesting to see hard-boiled detective Dick Powell and hard-boiled criminal James Cagney in their earlier films.

Join arts enthusiast Jack Brin to view films and film clips and talk about Hollywood  in this 4 part series, July & August 2019.  Brin is a former mathematics professor who also developed a music appreciation course for college students.

Registration is appreciated.
